Good Form

The Good Form Story

Learning to Run All Over Again

The unique partnership between New Balance and Good Form Running is borne of a simple insight. This insight is no complex, technical concept rooted in the complicated worlds of product design or biomechanics, but rather an unassuming fact that most runners — be they occasional joggers or elite athletes — were never taught how to run.

As a company dedicated to helping more people make running an ongoing part of their lives, New Balance recognized that a significant cause of running-related injuries was that, when it comes to form, most runners have been left to their own devices, resulting in gaits that may resist forward momentum and create unnecessary strain.

Good Form Running shares our modest roots. What began as improvised sessions in the crowded aisles of a Michigan running store named Playmakers (they still do these in-store classes, in the same aisles, today) has evolved into a program that can be taught in any venue to any type of runner. We share a common approach, as well. The staff of Playmakers, like New Balance, recognized that an informed runner who is able to stay injury-free and on the road will become a runner for life.

It is this shared ethos that drives our partnership, which we together hope to bring to road races, running stores, tracks and clubs across the country with the goal of helping people run more efficiently and with less pain, thus making something that New Balance and Good Form Running are both passionate about a permanent part of more people’s lives.

Glad to hear you are talking about good running form:) You should check out PoseMethod® of Running. Dr.
Romanov started Pose to teach the skill of running to runners. Posetech.com is a great resource to help people
really understand 'good' running form.

i bought a pair of new balance 801 (womens) about 2 months ago. and in this time my shoes and feet have begun to stink badly, i have tried odor eaters foot powder as well as an insole that wicks away sweat and odors. but yet this is still a very embarrasing problem. while i love these shoes i'm afraid since this is my first pair of nb in my life, i will never be interested in buying another pair. and yes i have 4 other top brand names and wear them all the same with no odor help and my feet do not stink, it is only with the new balance.

Virgilene,
The same thing happened to a pair of my 993's. I had them for about six months. I tried contacting my local new balance store but they said they could not do anything about it. I tried new insoles, foot powder, foot spray, and even tried washing them three different times. Nothing would work. I was beginning to think it was me, but I have three other pairs of new balance running shoes and non of them were doing this. I just had to throw them away.

Why would you leave a comment about a personal problem of bad smelling feet on a post about good running form???

Best way to eliminate shoes stink is to soak them in oxygen bleach (oxiclean) or specifically sodium percarbonate.

This will oxidize the odor compounds, which kills the smell.

Do not use chlorine bleach as it will destroy your shoes.

Hope that helps!

I have been checking my running for occasionally and one way i\'ve done that is run past building with lots of glass windows. It\'s an easy way to watch yourself run and check your form. Somtimes i\'ll check out other people\'s forms when we go on group runs and they check out mine. The more aware you are about proper form, the more you\'ll try and keep a good form during a run.

I have been wearing New Balance shoes for over 15 years, but the cat-urine smell put off by the last two pair I bought is enough to make me switch. I had to put them outside our bedroom door at night or the smell would wake me. My wife then made me keep them in the garage, as the whole house would smell in the morning. I hate going in the garage in the morning now. I have tried washing them in every solution I could think of. They come very clean - like new, but the smell is even worse.
Please tell me that there is a way to fix this. I buy American and I'd hate to change now.

To keep your shoes from smelling bad, use a boot dryer; it slowly keeps your shoes from smelling by keeping them dry and killing the foul bacteria that causes the odor. They cost about 30 to 40 bucks and are well worth the price.

I just bought a new and my second pair of mens black New Balance 927, and they smell too after only several weeks. I notice it I\'m in the car. It isn\'t like they are terrible but if I notice it so would others. My first pair was going on 2 years old and never had this problem. What would cause this? I don\'t wear them everyday.

Happy to report that Anne Marie L. from New Balance was very quick to respond to my post/email and the company has replaced my shoes. It only cost me the shipping one way (about $6.00). I appreciate that kid of customer support. Thanks Annie!

I'm not a runner, but found this thread after doing a google search on New Balance shoe smell. The smell is not foot odor. It is more like a sewer smell. My other shoes do not smell like this. I don't wear mine very often. Every other week or so. I bought some inserts to change out with the originals and will try the oxy clean.

These shoes you mention are not even running shoes! surely there must be a better place for this discussion? For example you can contact support directly or write a review at the product page.

For the rest of you, there is even more Good Form Running videos and stuff at their webpage. You can reach it through the link to playmakers in the article.

My husband has a \"Made in the USA\" paid of New Balance. The soles smell like cat urine. It\'s unbearable. I\'ve soaked them and sprayed them but we can\'t get rid of the smell. At least we know now it is the shoes as we are not the only ones with this problem.

Our family has found that proper form helps you run faster, but there are runners who are just as fast with improper form. To us the greatest benefit of proper running is less injury. If your child has less risk of injury they can train harder and more consistently, which in the end will help them reach their potential and find success. Thanks for providing great material.

Shoes

Good Form Running can be achieved in any footwear, but a shoe that encourages a more neutral foot position will be helpful for many runners – particularly those embracing a midfoot strike for the first time.
